We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
  • Extensive Qualifications: We researched the educational background of these gynaecologists to determine whether they pursued advanced training through fellowships or further specialised study.
  • Focus Areas: We chose gynaecologists with expertise in different areas, such as advanced laparoscopic surgery, endometriosis management, or urogynaecology.
  • Patient Feedback: We interviewed former patients and asked about the gynaecologists' communication, thoroughness, and treatment outcomes.
  • Contribution to the Medical Community: We asked around to see if these doctors are actively involved in the medical community.
  • We checked if they had leadership roles in hospitals, participated in training programs, or contributed to advancing gynaecological care.

Have you been putting off your gynaecologist appointment? Most people get the chills just booking the appointment… the clinical environment, the vulnerability, the unknown.

We get it – choosing the right healthcare professional for your intimate health is a big decision. That’s why we, the writing team at Auckland Magazine, have done the work for you.

We’ve researched and compiled a list of the best gynaecologists in Auckland. These specialists not only have extensive qualifications, they also provide compassion and patient-focused care.

How much does it cost to go to a gynaecologist in Auckland?

It costs at least 120 NZD to book an appointment with a gynaecologist in Auckland.
This is just an estimate. The actual cost will depend on the type of appointment and the clinic.

Contact Details: +6495200745

Operating Hours: Monday to Friday – 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Website: http://www.dranilsharma.co.nz/

Dr. Anil Sharma has over 30 years of experience in the field of gynaecology, so we had to check him out.

We like that he expertly manages a wide spectrum of gynaecological conditions. Those dealing with urogynaecological concerns praise his clear explanations and treatment options for urinary incontinence and prolapse.

We also appreciate his holistic approach to managing pelvic pain and endometriosis. He considers all aspects of your well-being and gives helpful tips to minimise pain and bring your effective relief.

Several patients we talked to also had great things to say about the positive outcomes they had with Dr Sharma’s meticulous laparoscopic surgery. Many were happy with the successful and minimally invasive removal of their fibroids.

His expertise in Novasure endometrial ablation treatment is also impressive. This is a procedure that removes the lining of the uterus to help with heavy bleeding. Patients told us they no longer had to feel paranoid about bleeding through.

That said, many complained about not being able to schedule an appointment with him right away. Some told us they had to wait weeks!

Pros

  • Over 30 years of experience
  • Holistic approaches
  • Meticulous laparoscopic surgery
  • Quick Novasure endometrial ablations

Cons

  • Long wait times for appointment

I think he would be a wonderful choice for anyone

“Dr Sharma has been absolutely amazing. He is kind, relaxed, efficient and has a great sense of humour. I have a complex medical history and as a result a fair amount of anxiety about having my procedure done. He took the time to get to know me properly, made sure I was well informed and as a result I felt very comfortable going into my surgery.

I really appreciate his expertise and feel very grateful to have had him as my specialist. I think he would be a wonderful choice for anyone, but particularly if you are feeling apprehensive or uncomfortable, then I would highly recommend.”

Address: 105 Remuera Road, Remuera

Contact Details: +6495241222

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Friday – 9 AM to 5 PM
  • Saturday – 8 AM – 12 PM

Website: https://www.drpraveendesilva.com/

Dr. Praveen De Silva impressed us with his surgical fellowship and advanced training from the well-respected Sydney Women’s Endosurgery Centre.

We like how he has put his his training to good use—particularly in how he uses pelvic nerve blocks. He injects local anaesthetic near specific nerves in the pelvis to reduce post-operative pain for women.

His gentle and precise surgical skills also impressed us. Many of his former patients really appreciated the quicker recovery times and smaller scars they had after their surgery.

Those seeking help for endometriosis management appreciated his thorough treatment options, feeling heard and understood.

We like his compassionate manner and attentive approach. Patients who had hysterectomies or fibroids valued the way he took the time to answer any questions, which helped alleviate their anxiety and made them feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues.

We’re just disappointed with the wait time because it’s a lot longer than in other clinics. Some had to wait for about 30 minutes just to be seen.

Pros

  • Advanced training from Sydney Women’s Endosurgery Centre
  • Uses pelvic nerve blocks to reduce pain
  • Gentle and precise surgical skills
  • Thorough treatment options
  • Compassionate and attentive approach

Cons

  • Wait times of up to 30 minutes

Incredibly skilled and gifted at advanced laparoscopic

“I had a major surgery with Dr Praveen de Silva on 16 June 2023 and cannot praise him highly enough. I had been following him for over 3 months as I was deciding which surgeon I trusted enough with my surgery and not only is he incredibly skilled and gifted at advanced laparoscopic techniques, excision of large tumours and handling strange cases, his bedside manner was exceptional. There are surgeons I interviewed in the past year who I also paid the $330 fee for a 40 min consult who impatiently explored things and left after 12 mins. Some were dismissive, some were nice enough but vague. Praveen is so different. He has such high emotional intelligence and answered all my questions with huge depth, explained his procedure and stayed for the full consult with no rushing and really helped me make the tough decision which was the best one for my optimal health. He took his time explaining my options and outcomes which just totally put me at ease. He emailed through information and wrote reports. He then performed my complicated surgery with incredible skill with one of New Zealand’s top anesthetists, Chris Payne by his side. The whole team were brilliant. He gave me his personal card and told me to stay in touch should any complications occur. He emailed to follow up and stayed in touch throughout my recovery. I texted him photo updates of my symptoms and wounds and he would call within 30 mins (even over the weekend) – it was an amazing service all around. Fran and his team at Auckland Gynecologists were also so helpful and such beautiful humans. Praveen is an exceptional surgeon and you are in very safe hands with him. Thanks to him I am now 7 weeks post op, feeling great and have my life back 🙏🌟”

Praveen was easy to talk to about sensitive topics

“On behalf of my partner: Praveen performed my third laparoscopic surgery for stage 3 endometriosis and also removed polyps from my uterus. He provided clear information about the risks without overwhelming us. Praveen was easy to talk to about sensitive topics related to my endometriosis and fertility journey, and his positive outlook reassured me. He went beyond his role as a gynaecologist, offering guidance on tough decisions, and I trust him completely.

His communication is excellent, and he is readily available. Praveen has strong connections to other specialists and a great rapport with reception staff. The clinic’s processes are efficient, and everyone is on the same page, with thorough note reviews. He collaborates effectively with colleagues and went out of his way to find answers and solutions to my unique situation, promptly following up on inquiries without needing reminders”

3. Dr Michael Wynn-Williams

Address: Ascot Central Level 2/7 Ellerslie Racecourse Drive

Contact Details: +6498831390

Operating Hours: Monday to Friday – 8:30 AM to 5 PM

Website: https://drmww.co.nz/

Dr. Michael Wynn-Williams got on our radar for his pelvic surgeries. We like how his minimally invasive approach leads to faster recovery times and less scarring.

We also like that he uses hysteroscopic techniques. This involves using a thin, telescope-like instrument with a camera that’s inserted into the uterus.

We like this because it allows him to diagnose and treat problems inside the uterus without needing to make any cuts.

People dealing with deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) have expressed immense gratitude for his understanding and his use of DIE ultrasounds. It’s basically a detailed imaging test that helps you get a better view of any endometriosis implants in your body.

Patients like this because it helps him to accurately diagnose and plan the best treatment for their specific situation.

Many also appreciate his innovative solutions for treating persistent pelvic pain and fibroids. For example, he offers uterine artery embolization to shrink fibroids without surgery.

However, we did find that the up to two-week wait for a consultation can be inconvenient at times.

Pros

  • Minimally invasive pelvic surgeries
  • Uses hysteroscopic techniques
  • Accurate diagnosis with DIE ultrasounds
  • Innovative solutions to treat pain and fibroids

Cons

  • Two week wait sometimes for a consult

We have been so happy with the care from him

“My mother was told she needed surgery for her ovaries and when she told me (because she has private health insurance) I googled the best gynecologist in Auckland. I found Dr Wynn-Williams and liked the look of him from his really good reviews and information. We have been so happy with the care from him and his team every step of the way!! My mother was happy with their initial meeting and then actually comforted and at peace after the preop meeting! She had her surgery today actually and we have already received an indepth post op report! Dr Wynn-Williams, although I have not personally met him has taken such great care of my mother and I am honestly just so thankful! She still needs to heal from her operation but as someone who has been involved witj a lot of specalists I can honestly tell he has seen her, he has heard her, and he has treated her as well as you could ever wish for your loved one to be treated! If anyone out there is looking for a gynecologist for themselves or their loved one and what you need falls into Dr Michael Wynn-Williams scope, ring up and book! Nothing is more important than the people we love and when they are sick you want the best of the best, so they can get back to their best! From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all you have done for my mother! Regardless, its obvious you have done your best to have her go forward with a more carefree and happy life and that just makes my heart so happy! 🥰🥰😇😇”

Wiped away all of our worries

“Dr Michael Wynn-Williams has a very cool, calm and collected aura. His confidence in being able to excise all of my endometriosis (stage 4) wiped away all of our worries. I went into the surgery excited & with a smile plastered across my face. I came out the same (except a little fatigued & with a tender belly this time!). Endometriosis is a viscous disease so I am really grateful people like Michael exist & have chosen this as their niche / profession. I felt at ease throughout the whole process and had an army of support afterwards. I was also able to get in touch with Michael easily when I had any concerns throughout my recovery. I really appreciated this as I’ve never had any surgeries before so I was unsure of what to expect afterwards. I would highly recommend Michael to anyone with endometriosis – especially complex cases. The nurses at Ascot deserve a mention too- they were absolutely incredible, warm & compassionate. Thanks team :)”

dr-ammar-al-abid

Address: 181 Shakespeare Road, Milford

Contact Details: +64 9 489 2384

Website: https://northshoregynaecologist.co.nz

We love how Dr. Ammar Al-Abid embraces a team approach to care planning and discusses everything with his patients so that they can feel well-supported throughout their care journey.

Many women navigating menopause appreciate his comprehensive understanding and tailored management plans.

Others who need a colposcopy (a procedure where he uses a special magnifying device to look closely at the cervix, vagina, and vulva) praised Dr. Al-Abid’s gentle and reassuring manner.

We like how he clearly explains each step of the process, which helps to ease any anxiety.

The one complaint we have heard is that when it comes to booking follow-up appointments, you can’t always secure one right away. We think this can be annoying if you like to have it on your schedule in advance.

Pros

  • Embraces a team approach to care planning
  • Great understanding of menopause
  • Gentle and reassuring colposcopy
  • Explains everything

Cons

  • Can’t always secure a follow-up appontment

Professional, knowledgeable and down to earth

“Professional, knowledgeable and down to earth.  You will be treated with respect and given a thorough explanation. Dr Ammar Al Abid has a great beside manner. Thank you for making me better and giving me great advice and putting a smile on my face.”

Address: 77 Carlton Gore Road, Newmarket

Contact Details: +64 9 524 1222

Operating Hours: Monday to Friday – 8:30 AM to 5 PM

Website: https://www.agg.co.nz

Dr. Guy Gudex got on our radar for being a fertility specialist who crafts plans that work. He puts his certification in reproductive endocrinology and infertility to good use.

We like how he doesn’t give up no matter how difficult the infertility problem is. Many of his patients who struggled with infertility appreciated how his plans resulted in successful pregnancies after years of trying.

However, his expertise extends beyond fertility. He’s also skilled in managing endometriosis.  His minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery gave many of his patients instant relief.

We also appreciate that his approach doesn’t end with surgery. His comprehensive plans included pain management strategies and hormonal therapy to avoid recurrence.

Another thing worth mentioning is his calm demeanor during colposcopy procedures. It really helps calm down patients who walk in with sky-high anxiety.

If there’s one downside, it’s the wait times. Appointments can sometimes run about 30 minutes behind schedule.

Pros

  • Effective fertility plans
  • Calm demeanor
  • Persistent doctor
  • Skilled in laparoscopic surgery

Cons

  • Occasional 30-minute appointment delays

I was well informed before the procedure about what to expect

“I had a procedure done here during level 3 lockdown. I can’t speak highly enough of Dr Gudex and his team. I was well informed before the procedure about what to expect, Covid protocol, parking etc – basically everything I needed to know. When I arrived on the day, I was welcomed by warm and friendly nurses and support staff. My procedure was done on time and a follow up appointment was booked. They also provided the best range of post surgery snacks I’ve ever had!! Thanks team.”
